Examining the rich and varied history of fashion photography, the exhibitions starts in 1911 with Edward Steichen. In this year he created the first “artistic” fashion photographs and ending in the year 2011 with digital technology as the dominant medium. It explores the ways some photographers, closely associated with fashion, have shaped evolving notions of style and beauty. There are more than one hundred sixty photographs, along with a selection of illustrations, costumes, magazine covers, advertisements and videos. Ellen von Unwerth: Ladyland Exhibition 2018 – London

The exhibition spans more than 30 years of iconic photographs by Ellen von Unwerth. Her work has graced the front covers of Vogue, ELLE, Glamour and many more. Her work on fashion editorials, short films for fashion brand like Chanel, Dior, Rolex and Azzedine Alaïa, and advertising campaigns have shifted fashion photography into the art world. With her photographs now being included in some of the world’s most important fine art collections and has been exhibited internationally.

She has published nine books over the years each of them an absolute delight to go through. They are – Snaps (1994), Wicked (1998), Couples (1999), Revenge (2003), Omahyra & Boyd (2005), Fräulein (2009), DieSpieler (2010), The Story of Olga (2012), and Heimat (2017).

The exhibition is split into three parts:

• Supermodels – Including photos of Kate Moss, Naomi Campbell, Claudia Schiffer, Elle McPherson

• Bavaria – From Ellen’s latest book Heimat. A humorous exploration of the German imagery, within the Bavarian countryside and its traditions,

• Frivolities – Selection of photos that span Ellen’s career that encapsulate her “emancipated eroticism”, combining high fashion and female playfulness.
